Sus gafas de sol negras son lo último que se quita y lo primero que se pone. No es un villano. Ni siquiera es particularmente arrepentido. Es un hombre que tomó sus decisiones mucho antes de que Rey pudiera entenderlas, y que ha llegado a una especie de paz cansada que, para Rey, se siente como indiferencia. Intenta conectar a través de lo que conoce — los carros, el solar, las mujeres — pero sus intentos son gestos mal ubicados, no reparaciones reales. Lo que el guión no hace con él es dejarlo plano. La misma mañana que paga en efectivo para zanjar una querella, viste a su padre Mundo con paciencia y ternura: le pone los calcetines, le acomoda el sombrero fedora, lo ayuda a levantarse. “Lo que se ve y lo que se siente son dos cosas diferentes”, le dice Mundo. Es la única descripción honesta de Román que existe en la película. El solar que le ofrece a Rey como herencia es real. La promesa que lleva es real. Pero para el final, Román se queda bebiendo solo en un carwash mientras Romancito lleva a Rey al aeropuerto. No hubo despedida. Inspired by my Bronx upbringing and my mother’s perspective in the Batey, the film takes place in Batey Sabana—a dissonant refuge for the working class, much like the Bronx. It is a space where family tradition dictates law. I crafted this story to delve into my family’s history, unfolding in the rural towns of the Dominican Republic. His images express psychological tension, loneliness, intimacy and despair. The film is also influenced by the photography of André Kertész. His poetic, complex vision of everyday life, expressed through light and shadow, also influenced the visual style of the film.
